Universal Audio SD-1 Dynamic Microphone

The Universal Audio SD-1 is a dynamic cardioid microphone built for professional recording, live performance, livestreaming and podcasting. It is aimed at vocalists, instrumentalists and content creators who need a polished, broadcast-ready sound without a treated studio. The dynamic capsule naturally rejects off-axis noise such as fans or room ambience. It delivers a studio-quality signal straight to your interface.

Installation and common issues

Connect the microphone to any standard XLR input on an audio interface, mixer or preamp; no drivers or external power are required. Engage the selectable low-cut filter to reduce low-frequency rumble and proximity effect when working close to the capsule. Use the articulation boost switch to add presence and clarity to vocals or instruments. The hardware controls are immediate, so misconfiguration is rare; the only typical error is forgetting to enable phantom power on the preamp, which this dynamic mic does not need.

Capacity and headroom

The cardioid pattern and dynamic design provide high gain-before-feedback and excellent off-axis rejection for close-miked speech, vocals and instruments in untreated rooms. It handles loud sources such as guitar cabinets or drums without distortion, while the low-cut and articulation switches shape the tone before the signal hits the converter. The microphone is not suited for distant room capture or stereo recording techniques that require matched pairs or omnidirectional response.

Questions about this item

How can I verify the cardioid pattern is rejecting off-axis sound after setup?

Speak into the front of the microphone while playing noise from the side; the dynamic design naturally rejects background sounds like fans or refrigerators so your voice stays clear.

What accessories are included and what must I buy separately?

The microphone itself is supplied; you will need to provide an XLR cable, a stand or boom arm, and an audio interface or preamp with phantom power disabled.

Which version of the SD-1 should I choose for close-miked vocals?

The SD-1 is offered in white with a cardioid polar pattern, selectable low cut and articulation boost switches, and Apollo Channel Strip Presets tailored for speech and vocals.
