Silver 3.5 inch server hard drive with exposed circuit board

Universal

Universal Seagate Exos X18 18TB SAS 7200RPM 3.5" HDD

SKU CH-7HQ9-E981X

Enterprise 18 TB SAS hard drive with helium-sealed design, 7200 RPM speed and 256 MB cache for server storage arrays

  • 18 TB capacity for massive server storage
  • 7200 RPM rotation speed for fast data access
  • SAS 12 Gbps interface for high-throughput connectivity
  • Helium sealed design for reliable enterprise operation
  • 256 MB cache to accelerate read performance

Enterprise capacity drive

This 18 TB helium-sealed hard drive uses a SAS 12 Gb/s interface and spins at 7200 RPM with a 256 MB cache. It is built for servers and storage arrays that require sustained throughput and high areal density. The 3.5 inch form factor fits standard enterprise bays and the SuperParity feature adds an extra layer of data integrity.

Server and array deployments

The drive suits administrators expanding NAS, SAN or backup targets where 12 Gb/s SAS connectivity is already provisioned. It is not for laptops, desktops or workstations that lack a SAS host bus adapter or the necessary backplane infrastructure. Buyers without enterprise drive bays or RAID controllers should look elsewhere.

SAS 12 Gb/s interface

The single specification that decides fitment is the SAS 12 Gb/s interface, which requires a compatible controller or backplane to operate. Systems equipped only with other drive interfaces cannot use this device. Verify that your hardware provides SAS ports before purchasing.

Questions about this item

What SAS controller or backplane is required to connect the 12 Gbps SAS interface?

A SAS host bus adapter or RAID card with a 12 Gbps SAS port, or a server backplane wired for 12 Gbps SAS, is needed to run the drive at its rated transfer rate.

Can the 3.5 inch 7200 RPM drive share a SAS backplane with older 6 Gbps SAS drives?

Yes, the 12 Gbps SAS interface negotiates down to 6 Gbps, so the Exos X18 will operate alongside legacy drives on the same backplane at the slower speed.

How can I verify the 256 MB cache and helium-sealed design are active after installation?

Check the drive’s SMART data or controller BIOS; the reported cache size should show 256 MB and the model string will confirm the helium-sealed Exos X18 firmware.
