A dual-band VHF/UHF telescopic antenna with SMA-Male connector extends to 42 inches for longer range and retracts to 11 inches for portable two-way radio use
The RH660S is a retractable whip antenna built for handheld two-way radios that use an SMA-Male connector. It covers VHF from 136 to 174 MHz and UHF from 400 to 470 MHz, with peak performance at 144 and 430 MHz. The antenna handles up to 10 W of transmit power and provides gain rated at 3.0 dBi on VHF and 5.5 dBi on UHF. It is intended for radio operators who want a single antenna that works across both common amateur bands.
Six telescoping sections collapse the antenna to 11 inches for carry and extend it to 42 inches for use. The mechanical design lets you adjust the physical length to suit the operating environment or storage space. A VSWR below 1.5 indicates a good impedance match across the stated frequency ranges. The SMA-Male connector threads directly onto compatible handhelds without adapters.
Swapping a short stock antenna for the RH660S adds effective aperture on both VHF and UHF, which can improve receive sensitivity and transmit reach. The benefit is clearest when the radio is used outdoors or from inside a vehicle where the longer whip can be fully extended. Operators who need a permanently compact profile or who work only on a single band may not gain enough to justify the extra length.

The SMA-Male connector carries 136-174 MHz VHF and 400-470 MHz UHF bands, peaking at 144 MHz and 430 MHz respectively.
At full extension the antenna reaches 42 inches, so allow at least that much vertical space above the radio.
Screw the SMA-Male plug into the radio's SMA-Female jack by hand until snug; the common mistake is cross-threading or over-tightening with tools.
