Vszerda SFF-8639 to SFF-8643 4i cable

This 50 cm internal power cable converts a SFF-8639 U.2 device connector to a SFF-8643 4i host port. It is built for PCIe 3.0, 4.0 and 5.0 x4 links and meets the 64 Gbps specification. The assembly is transparent to the operating system and requires no software drivers. It targets builders adding NVME storage to a mainboard with a Mini SAS HD interface.

Replaces direct U.2 backplane wiring

The cable lets you connect a U.2 NVME SSD such as an Intel 750, P3600 or P3700 to a mainboard SFF-8643 4i slot without a drive cage. The jump is worth it when the board lacks a native U.2 port but exposes a Mini SAS HD connector for PCIe x4. It does not work with SAS RAID controllers and hot-plugging is not supported.

Limited to PCIe x4 electrical width

The SFF-8643 4i interface carries four PCIe lanes, so the link cannot exceed x4 bandwidth. The 50 cm length suits typical chassis routing but offers no slack for distant drive bays. Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2 need a native NVM Express driver update before the drive is recognised. The cable alone is supplied; no adapter or card is included.

Questions about this item

What clearance does the 50 cm SFF-8639 to SFF-8643 4i cable need inside the chassis?

The cable is 50 cm long and uses a black SFF-8639 plug on one end and an SFF-8643 4i plug on the other; allow enough space for the bend radius of a shielded PCIe 4.0 cable and for the connectors to seat fully without strain.

Which orientation do the SFF-8639 and SFF-8643 4i connectors require during installation?

Both connectors are keyed; align the notch on each plug with the socket before pressing in — forcing the wrong orientation can damage the pins, and the cable does not support hot-plugging.

When should the cable be inspected or replaced in a PCIe 3.0 x4 or 4.0 x4 NVME link?

Check the shielding and connector latches whenever the system is opened; replace the cable if the SFF-8639 or SFF-8643 4i contacts show wear, the jacket is kinked, or the link drops below the 64 Gbps PCIe 4.0 spec.
