NPN photoelectric sensor with 18–120 mm adjustable range, 1300 Hz switching, and IP67 protection
The Wenglor HK12NA is a photoelectric sensor with an NPN switching output designed for industrial automation tasks. It detects objects within an adjustable range of 18...120 mm using a red light source. The sensor operates on a 10...30 V DC supply voltage and features a 4-wire cable connection. It suits engineers integrating presence detection into machinery or conveyor systems.
The unit draws less than 25 mA at 24 V and operates reliably across a temperature range of -25...60 °C. Its plastic housing is fully encapsulated to meet IP67 protection, resisting dust and water ingress without active cooling. Short-circuit, reverse-polarity and overload protection circuits maintain stable operation. A switching frequency of 1300 Hz and 385 µs response time support fast cycle applications.
A 2 m, 4-wire cable is permanently attached, eliminating the need for separate connectors or junction boxes. Sensitivity is adjusted via a built-in potentiometer for precise range setting. The NPN output provides both normally-open and normally-closed signals simultaneously. These features reduce installation time and simplify wiring in control cabinets.

Mount the plastic housing securely, connect the 4-wire 2 m cable to a 10...30 V DC supply observing NPN polarity, then use the potentiometer to set the 18...120 mm range; the step often missed is fine-tuning the potentiometer after power-up so the switching point matches the actual target distance.
The red-light emitter is rated for 100000 h at 25 °C; expect to replace the sensor once accumulated operating hours approach that figure, and periodically clean the lens to keep the light spot within specification.
The 1300 Hz switching frequency combined with a 385 µs response time sets the maximum event rate; sustained triggering faster than this will cause missed detections before thermal or voltage limits are reached.
