Surveillance-grade 6 TB hard drive

The Western Digital Purple 6 TB drive is built for continuous 24/7 recording in network video recorder systems. It handles the constant write workload and elevated heat of always-on surveillance environments where a standard desktop drive would not last.

Straightforward 3.5-inch SATA installation

The drive fits any standard 3.5-inch bay and connects with a regular SATA data and power cable. No extra drivers or firmware steps are required; the only common issue is forgetting to initialise the disk in the NVR or operating system before recording starts.

5400 RPM spindle speed for steady streaming

The 5400 RPM rotation rate delivers consistent sequential throughput for multiple high-definition camera streams. Buyers who need faster random access for database or boot workloads should choose a different drive class.

Questions about this item

How can I verify the drive is running at 5400 RPM and communicating over SATA 6Gbps after installation?

Check the drive's reported RPM and SATA link speed in your NVR's SMART data or system BIOS; they should show 5400 RPM and a 6 Gbps connection.

What comes with the WD64PURZ and what must I supply myself?

The drive ships alone in anti-static packaging; you will need a SATA data cable, a SATA power connector from your PSU and a 3.5-inch drive bay or mounting bracket.

Which capacity and cache combination suits a 24-bay NVR recording 64 cameras continuously?

The 6 TB model with 256 MB cache is built for 24/7 surveillance workloads and matches the capacity per bay in a 24-bay array.
