WD Purple Pro 12TB surveillance drive

This 12TB 3.5-inch hard drive uses a SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and spins at 7200 RPM with a 512MB cache. It employs CMR recording technology and OptiNAND for advanced AI-enabled recorders, video analytics appliances and deep-learning servers. The drive is engineered for always-on operation in smart video solutions.

Suits installers building 24/7 video systems

The drive supports up to 64 single-stream HD cameras and handles multiple streams from smart cameras. A workload rating of 550TB per year and an MTBF of 2.5 million hours match continuous recording demands. AllFrame AI technology helps reduce frame loss during playback. Buyers needing a desktop drive for general-purpose storage or a different interface should look elsewhere.

550TB annual workload rating decides fit

This single figure shows whether the drive can sustain the write intensity of a multi-camera surveillance deployment. If the planned system writes less data, a lower-rated drive may suffice; if it writes more, the drive falls short. The rating is the decisive specification for this product class.

Questions about this item

Does the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface limit the 12TB WD Purple Pro to 6.0Gb/s in practice?

The SATA 6.0Gb/s interface caps the maximum theoretical transfer rate at 6.0Gb/s; real-world throughput will be lower and depends on the host controller and cable quality.

What are the exact dimensions I need to clear for this 3.5-inch drive?

The drive measures 147.00mm long, 101.60mm wide and 26.10mm high, so ensure your bay or cage provides at least that much clearance.

How do I install the WD122PURP and what step is commonly missed?

Mount the drive using four 3.5-inch screw holes, connect the SATA data and power cables, then enable AHCI or RAID mode in the system BIOS so the 7200 RPM drive is recognised correctly.
