Purpose-built for AI video workloads

The WD Purple Pro 8TB drive is engineered for advanced AI-enabled recorders, video analytics appliances and deep-learning servers that operate around the clock. Its SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and CMR recording technology suit RAID and JBOD arrays in professional surveillance deployments.

Capacity and headroom

An 8TB capacity with 256MB cache and 7200 RPM spindle speed provides sustained throughput for up to 64 single-stream HD cameras and multiple smart-camera streams. The 550TB per year workload rating and 2.5 million hour MTBF indicate headroom for continuous write-heavy capture, while performance tapers when concurrent high-bitrate streams exceed the drive’s sustained transfer capability.

Upgrade path and fit

This drive replaces lower-capacity surveillance HDDs or desktop-class drives that lack the AllFrame AI streaming optimisation and tarnish-resistant components required for harsh 24/7 environments. The jump is worthwhile when moving to AI-driven analytics, multi-stream smart cameras or RAID configurations that demand the 550TB annual workload rating and 2.5 million hour MTBF.

Questions about this item

Will the 8TB WD Purple Pro work alongside my existing 3 Gb/s SATA drives in the same RAID array?

The drive uses the SATA 6.0Gb/s interface and will negotiate down to the controller's maximum supported speed, so it can share a RAID array with slower SATA drives.

How can I confirm the drive is running at 7200 RPM with AllFrame AI active after installation?

Monitor SMART attributes for spindle speed and use the vendor diagnostic utility to verify AllFrame AI streaming optimisation is enabled.

The listing says Bare Drive — does the box include mounting screws, a SATA cable or any software?

Bare Drive means only the 3.5" hard drive is supplied; mounting hardware, cables and any management software must be sourced separately.
