Purpose-built surveillance storage

The WD Purple Pro WD142PURP is a 14TB 3.5-inch internal hard drive engineered for advanced smart video recorders, appliances and servers. It uses CMR recording at 7200 RPM with a 512MB cache and a SATA interface. AllFrame AI technology improves ATA streaming to reduce frame loss during 24/7 operation.

Upgrade from standard desktop drives

Desktop-class drives lack the workload rating and firmware optimisation required for continuous multi-stream video capture. This drive supports up to 64 single-stream HD cameras and handles many modern smart cameras that transmit multiple streams. The 550TB-per-year workload rating and 2.5-million-hour MTBF justify the step up when recording never stops.

Capacity and headroom

Fourteen terabytes provides substantial space for high-resolution footage and AI metadata generated by always-on analytics. OptiNAND technology and proactive storage management with WDDA help maintain consistent write performance under heavy sustained loads. The drive reaches its practical limit when camera counts or stream bitrates exceed the rated 64-stream design target or the annual workload ceiling.

Questions about this item

Will this 3.5" drive fit a standard desktop drive bay?

Yes, the WD142PURP uses the standard 3.5-inch form factor and SATA interface, so it mounts in any desktop bay with matching screw holes and connects via a regular SATA data and power cable.

What is the most common mistake when installing this SATA drive?

Forgetting to connect both the SATA data cable to the motherboard and the SATA power cable from the power supply; the drive will not spin up without both connections seated firmly.

How long is the drive rated to run in a 24/7 surveillance system?

The WD142PURP carries a 2.5 million hour MTBF rating and a 550TB per year workload rating, so it is engineered for continuous operation in always-on video recording environments.
