Brush Overview

The Wooster Brush Company P3971 is a 1-1/2 inch flat sash paint brush designed for detailed trim and edge work. Its firm polyester bristles hold shape across all paint and coating types, making it suitable for both professional painters and DIY users tackling interior or exterior projects.

Bristle Performance

Gold-coloured synthetic filaments measure 2 3/16 inches in length with a 1/2 inch thickness, delivering consistent paint pickup and release. The firm stiffness maintains control on medium and smooth surfaces such as wood, drywall, metal, brick and concrete without excessive flex during normal application.

Sustained Use

The beavertail plastic handle provides a comfortable grip that reduces fatigue during extended painting sessions. Polyester bristles resist water absorption, so the brush retains its stiffness and shape when used with water-based or oil-based coatings over long periods, allowing continuous work without frequent reconditioning.

Questions about this item

How do I fit the 1-1/2 in flat sash brush into a tight corner without bending the polyester bristles?

Hold the beavertail handle at a slight angle and use only the tip of the firm bristles to cut in; pressing the full 2 3/16 in length flat against the surface splays the filaments and leaves ridges.

When should I replace the polyester bristles on this Wooster brush?

Replace the brush when the gold filaments lose their firm spring, split at the tips, or no longer hold a sharp edge after thorough cleaning with the correct solvent for oil or water-based coatings.

What is the first sign the 1/2 in thick bristle pack is overheating during a long staining job?

The firm polyester filaments will soften and lay over instead of snapping back, causing the brush to deposit an uneven film on smooth or medium-textured wood, metal or drywall.
