Office mono printer for high-volume teams

The Xerox AltaLink B8145 is a monochrome laser printer built for workgroups that print up to 45 pages per minute. It handles tabloid-size paper and includes a 128 GB hard drive for stored jobs and scanned documents. Standard functions cover copy, print, scan and email with support for cloud repositories such as Dropbox, OneDrive and Google Drive. It suits offices that need fast, reliable mono output without colour capability.

Thermals noise and power in daily use

First-page-out time is as fast as 3.8 seconds, so queues stay short during peak periods. The engine runs at over 40 pages per minute once warmed up, and two-sided printing reduces paper consumption without extra handling. Draft mode and long-sheet banner printing are available for internal drafts and wide-format jobs. No acoustic or power-draw figures are provided by the manufacturer.

Upgrading from slower mono devices

This model replaces single-function printers or older copiers that cannot match 45 ppm throughput or tabloid support. The jump is worth it when scan-to-email, cloud printing and booklet creation become daily requirements. It does not suit buyers who need colour output, integrated finishers or additional feeders, as those are sold separately. OS support spans Windows 7 through Windows Server 2019 and macOS 10.13 to 10.15.

Questions about this item

How do I install the optional 500 GB HDD and what step is often missed?

The 500 GB HDD is an optional accessory; installation requires opening the designated drive bay, securing the drive with the supplied screws, and connecting the interface. The step often missed is formatting the drive via the device's system menu before first use.

What maintenance or replacement will the 128 GB hard drive need later?

The 128 GB hard drive stores print jobs and system data. Over time it may require a firmware update or re-initialisation if errors appear. Replacement is only needed if the drive fails, which would be indicated by read/write error messages on the control panel.

At what point does the 45 ppm print speed limit appear during sustained use?

The 45 pages per minute rating applies to simplex A4/Letter output. The limit shows up first when printing complex graphics at 1200 x 2400 dpi or when using long-sheet banner mode, where the engine downshifts to maintain image quality and media handling stability.
