HD tuner or FM transmitter: two ways to add features

An HD Radio tuner adds digital reception to a compatible radio, and works where stations broadcast digital signals, mainly in North America. An FM transmitter is simpler: it plays audio from a phone or memory card on a vacant FM frequency, usually in the 87.5 to 108.0 MHz band, and the car radio picks it up. It needs no wiring, but quality is limited to FM and static can appear in crowded cities.

Charging output, Bluetooth version and memory-card slots

Many FM transmitters plug into the 12 V socket and add Bluetooth 5.0, a microphone for hands-free calls and USB charging ports. Titles name charging standards such as PD at 18 W or QC 3.0, which only help if your phone supports them. A TF slot reads music files from a microSD card. Choose an unused frequency, and change it when you drive between cities.

Questions about HD Radio Tuners and Bluetooth FM Transmitters

Why does my FM transmitter hiss or crackle?
Usually another station is close to the chosen frequency. Pick a quiet gap in the dial, turn the phone volume up near maximum and the radio volume lower, and keep cables away from the antenna lead.
Will an HD Radio tuner work anywhere?
Digital HD Radio broadcasts are available mainly in North America and only where stations transmit them. Elsewhere the tuner falls back to analog reception or does nothing, so check local coverage first.
Is an aux cable better than an FM transmitter?
A wired aux or USB connection usually sounds cleaner and avoids interference, if your car has the port. An FM transmitter is the fallback for radios that have only the antenna input.
