Start with the connector on the tow vehicle. A 4-pole flat plug carries tail, brake and turn signals only. A 7-way blade plug, common on North American trucks, adds a brake-controller feed, reverse lights and a 12 V supply, while European towbars use a 13-pin plug with a different layout. Converters such as a 7-way US to 13-pin EU unit bridge the two, but check which functions they pass through. Vehicle-specific harness kits plug into the factory connector for your make, model and year, so match all three.
Brake and turn signals are not wired the same way on every vehicle. A 2-wire system shares one bulb filament for brake and turn, which is the usual layout on North American trailers, while many cars light brake and turn with separate bulbs, a 3-wire system. A converter bridges the two, most often 3-wire to 2-wire, so check which way it converts. Without the right one, the trailer may show brake or turn signals wrongly or not at all. Universal kits splice into the car's rear light wiring, so confirm the wire colors against your wiring diagram before cutting anything.
A ball hitch has to match the coupler: the common ball diameters are 1-7/8, 2 and 2-5/16 inches, and the size is stamped on the coupler. A gooseneck ball of 2-5/16 inches rated for 30,000 lb belongs to heavy goosenecks, not light utility trailers. Always work to the lowest rating in the chain of ball, coupler, hitch receiver and tow vehicle, because the weakest part sets the limit. Hitch pin locks come in 1/2 and 5/8 inch diameters, so measure your receiver's pin hole.
For straps and tow hooks, check whether the stated rating is a working load or a breaking strength, which is several times higher, and pick a strap rated well above the weight of the vehicle you are moving. Tow-hook covers and similar trim pieces are listed for a specific model and year, so read the fitment in the title before buying.
