Stored air, a quick inflator or a vacuum?
These listings cover three different machines. A tank compressor holds air under pressure and releases it to run tools, so the tank volume and the airflow it sustains at a stated PSI matter most. A handheld or 12 V inflator has no tank and simply fills tires, balls and similar items, so look at maximum pressure, the power source and whether it stops automatically at a set pressure. A vacuum pump does the opposite and removes air, so its flow rate and the depth of vacuum it reaches decide whether it can do the work.
Where air fittings stop matching
Air accessories only work if they connect. Quick couplers come in several profiles, such as industrial and automotive, and a plug from one will not seat in a coupler from another, so match the profile and the thread, often 1/4-inch NPT, across hose, regulator and tool. Hose inner diameter also limits how much air reaches the tool. Cordless inflators normally use their own battery pack, so check whether it is included. For vacuum pumps, confirm the inlet fitting suits your hoses and which oil the pump needs.
Questions about Air Compressors, Inflators and Vacuum Pumps
- How big a tank do I need?
- Tank size mostly sets how long a burst of air lasts, not how strong the compressor is. For inflating and short jobs a small tank is fine. For sanders, grinders or spray painting, the airflow in CFM matters more than tank volume.
- What does a vacuum pump's micron rating mean?
- It states how deep a vacuum the pump can pull, and a lower number is a deeper vacuum. Evacuating air-conditioning or refrigeration lines needs a deep vacuum, while degassing or vacuum clamping tolerates less. Flow rate in CFM tells you how quickly it gets there.
- Why will my air coupler not fit the hose?
- Couplers come in several incompatible profiles, such as industrial and automotive, and in different thread sizes. Match the profile and the thread on both sides, and standardize on one profile so every hose and tool plugs together.
