Splitting AC power without overloading the plug

A splitter shares power; it does not add any. A NEMA 5-15P plug is rated for 15 A at 125 V, so everything connected through it must stay below that, with a margin for continuous loads. Add up the amps or watts of each device and compare them with the plug and the thinnest wire in the splitter, shown in codes such as SJT 16 AWG x 3C or SJT 14 AWG x 3C. C14 to three C13 splitters work the same way for rack equipment. Space heaters and similar appliances do not belong on a splitter.

Splitting low-voltage cables for cards, drives and fans

A PCIe 8-pin to dual 8-pin (6+2) splitter lets one cable from the power supply reach two connectors, but the wire behind it is unchanged. Each 8-pin connector is specified for up to 150 W, so a demanding graphics card needs a separate cable from the supply for every connector, and a splitter suits only a light load. SATA power and fan splitters are gentler: a few drives or fans can share one cable or header, within the total current of the source. Prefer 18 AWG or thicker wire for card power, since thin budget wire heats up.

Questions about Y-Splitter Power Cables

Can a PCIe splitter power a high-end graphics card?
It is not advised. A single supply cable is built to feed one connector, and splitting it doubles the current through the same wire. Use a separate cable from the power supply for each connector on demanding cards.
How many devices can I plug into a Y-splitter cord?
As many as their combined draw allows within the plug rating. Add up the amps on each device label and keep the total below the plug and cord rating, leaving room for start-up surges and long hours of use.
Does wire gauge matter on a short splitter?
Yes, because current heats thin wire however short it is. Prefer 18 AWG or thicker for graphics cards and drives, and for AC splitters check the AWG and amp rating marked on the jacket.
