Why VGA picture quality depends on the cable

VGA is analog, so the cable is part of the picture. A well-made HD15 cable has shielded, coaxial wires for red, green and blue plus ferrite cores, and holds 1920 x 1080 and above sharply. A thin, unshielded or very long cable shows ghosting, soft text and color fringing, especially at high resolution. Check that the cable is fully wired: the monitor identification pins are what let a computer detect the screen and offer the right resolution, and cheap cables sometimes leave them out. VGA carries video only, so sound needs a separate cable.

Male-to-male, extension, splitter and BNC variants

A male-to-male cable connects a computer to a monitor or projector, while male-to-female versions extend an existing run. A splitter cable sends one VGA output to two displays, but passive splitters weaken the signal, so long runs may need an amplified splitter. Some professional and CRT equipment uses five BNC connectors for red, green, blue and sync instead of the 15-pin plug. Converting a digital HDMI or DisplayPort output to VGA takes an active adapter with a chip inside, not a plain cable.

Questions about VGA and SVGA Monitor Cables

Why does my VGA picture look blurry or ghosted?
Usual causes are a long or unshielded cable, loose thumbscrews, or a resolution above what the monitor handles well. Try a shorter cable with ferrite cores, tighten the screws, and run the monitor at its native resolution.
Can a VGA cable carry sound?
No. VGA carries video only, so audio needs its own cable, such as a 3.5 mm cable from the computer to the speakers or to the monitor if it has audio input.
Can I connect an HDMI port to a VGA monitor with a plain cable?
No. HDMI is digital and VGA is analog, so the signal must be converted. Use an active HDMI to VGA adapter, which often needs USB power, and check that it supports your resolution.
