Is onboard audio really not enough?

Most motherboards and laptops already have usable audio, so start by naming the problem. Hiss in headphones, a weak signal on high-impedance headphones, a missing microphone or line input, or no surround output are good reasons to add a card. Better speakers or headphones often fix more than a new card would. A sound card changes three things: the digital-to-analog converter, the amplifier and the number of inputs and outputs.

Cards also move the audio circuitry away from the electrical noise of the motherboard, which can cut interference. Many USB models do the same externally and work on laptops, consoles and desktops without opening a case. If you only need more jacks, a basic adapter is enough. See internal and USB sound cards for the cards themselves.

Where each audio product fits

Cards are one part of the aisle. Beside them sit volume knobs and audio controls, which give you a physical dial and mute button instead of keyboard shortcuts. If you work with monitors or a mixer, a control puck on the desk saves reaching behind the computer. Check that it connects over USB and works with your operating system. The volume knobs and audio controls page covers them.

Think about the full chain, not just the card. Speakers need the right plug: 3.5 mm analog, optical or USB. Headphone impedance tells you how much amplification they need, and gaming headsets with a USB connection may have their own sound hardware, which makes a card unnecessary. Match channels to your speakers: stereo for two, 5.1 or 7.1 only if you own that many.

Questions about PC Sound Cards and Audio Accessories

Will a sound card improve sound quality?
It can when onboard audio is noisy or too weak for your headphones. With modest speakers or earbuds the difference is small, so upgrade the weakest link in the chain first.
Do I need a sound card for gaming?
No. Onboard audio is fine for most games. A card can add better surround processing, a stronger headphone amplifier or extra inputs, which matter mostly for audiophile headphones or streaming.
Can I use a USB sound card with a laptop?
Yes. Most work without drivers on current operating systems. Plug it in, select it as the output device, and check the listing for Windows or Mac support.
