Width and load come first for stands, benches and covers

Match a stand to the instrument's width and weight. A 61-key keyboard is much narrower than an 88-key digital piano, and heavier pianos need a stand rated for their weight. Benches vary in height and width, and an adjustable one suits growing players. Dust covers are sized by key count or width in inches; a stretch cover listed for 49 to 55 inch widths is an 88-key size and will hang loose on a 61-key instrument. Check measurements, not color.

Sustain pedals, lamps and power plugs

A sustain pedal plugs into a 6.35 mm jack, and its switch polarity can differ between makers, so a pedal may work backwards on another keyboard; a polarity switch solves it. Expression pedals need a stereo jack and are not interchangeable with sustain pedals. For power, match the adapter's voltage, current and plug polarity to the label on the instrument, not just the plug size. A clamp-on LED lamp makes reading music easier.

Questions about Piano and Keyboard Accessories

How wide a stand do I need for an 88-key keyboard?
An 88-key keyboard is around 50 inches wide or more, so choose a stand that supports that width and the instrument's weight. A single-tier X stand suits lighter keyboards; a double-braced one is steadier for heavy digital pianos.
Why does my sustain pedal work backwards?
The pedal's switch polarity does not match the keyboard. Switch the keyboard off, plug the pedal in, and switch it on again without pressing the pedal, or use the pedal's polarity switch if it has one.
Can I use any power adapter with my keyboard?
No. The adapter must match the voltage, the current rating (equal or higher) and the polarity marked on the instrument. A plug that fits physically can still be wrong and damage the keyboard.
