How many keys, and how do they feel?
Thirty-two slim keys fit a backpack and suit melodies and bass lines; 49 and 61 keys give both hands room, with 61 spanning five octaves. Slim keys are narrower than a piano's, so full-size keys feel more natural if you play piano. Key action matters as much as count: synth-action keys are light and quick, semi-weighted keys feel firmer, and aftertouch senses pressure after the note starts, adding vibrato or filter movement.
Software mapping, arpeggiators and what powers the unit
Many controllers come with presets for popular music software, so knobs and faders control instruments straight away. An arpeggiator or step sequencer builds patterns, and some units add CV or gate outputs for analog synths. Most draw power over USB, which is handy with a laptop. Protective covers, such as one made for a specific compact synthesizer, are shaped to a particular model, so check the exact name.
Questions about Master Keyboards and Keyboard Controllers
- Is a master keyboard the same as a digital piano?
- No. A master keyboard has no built-in sounds or speakers; it sends MIDI to software or modules. A digital piano makes its own sound. If you want to play without a computer, choose a digital piano or a synthesizer.
- Do I need weighted keys on a controller?
- If your main goal is piano, yes, or at least semi-weighted keys for a firmer touch. For synth parts, pads and electronic music, lighter synth-action keys are quicker and easier to play, and the controller weighs less.
- Will a controller work with my music software?
- Almost certainly, because controllers send standard MIDI. Plug-and-play USB models work without drivers on most computers, but check whether preset mapping for your software is included for the knobs and faders.
