Three numbers to check before any mount: size, weight, VESA

Every mount lists a supported TV size, a maximum weight and the VESA patterns it accepts. The size range is a guide, but the weight limit and the VESA hole spacing on the back of the TV are the fit conditions. A mount rated to 220 lb handles a large set comfortably, while one rated to 66 lb suits lighter small and mid-size sets. Add the weight of any soundbar or accessory you hang from the arm.

Pick the motion type to suit the room. Fixed mounts sit flattest. Tilt, often plus or minus 15 degrees, angles the screen down for high placement and cuts glare. Full-motion or articulating arms swivel up to 180 degrees and extend, for corner placement or shared viewing, but they need more room, a stronger wall and careful cable slack. Ceiling mounts suit projectors and some TVs.

Wall type, stud spacing and the install hardware

The wall is the weakest link. Drywall with wood studs needs lag bolts into at least two studs, whose spacing is commonly 16 inches on center in North America; metal studs, brick and concrete use different anchors, so check which hardware the kit includes. Measure so the screen center sits near eye level when seated, and run power through in-wall rated cable rather than a standard cord. Some kits include a level and spacers for uneven walls.

Questions about TV Wall Mounts: Tilt, Full-Motion and Ceiling

What does VESA 400 x 400 mean?
It is the distance between the mounting holes on the back of the TV, 400 mm across and 400 mm down. The mount must list that pattern or a range that includes it, and larger TVs often use patterns like 400 x 200 or 600 x 400.
Can I mount a TV on drywall without a stud?
Not safely for heavy TVs. Drywall alone does not hold the pulling forces of an arm. Use studs, solid masonry anchors, or a mounting plate that spreads the load across several studs, and follow the mount's weight rating.
How high should I mount the TV?
Center the screen at eye level when seated, roughly 1 to 1.2 meters above the floor. Mount higher over a fireplace only with a tilt or pull-down arm, because looking up for long periods strains the neck.
