Three tapes, three jobs

Each tape does a different job. Polymer grip tape, such as the thin 0.5 mm kind, wraps the stick handle for a tacky hold on gloves. Cloth tape is the traditional choice for the blade and the knob, giving a durable surface that takes the puck and the ice. Clear polyethylene sock tape holds shin guards in place and keeps socks tidy, and being clear it does not clash with team colors. Colors and camo prints are cosmetic.

How much tape a stick or a sock takes

Pre-cut grip tape, such as a 39 inch strip, wraps a stick handle, while a roll quoted in yards, like a 1 inch wide sock tape of around 27 yards, is cut to suit. Thinner tape gives more feel for the stick; thicker tape cushions the hands but adds bulk. To wrap a handle, start at the top, overlap each turn by about half the width and keep even tension so there are no wrinkles.

Questions about Hockey Stick Tape, Grip Tape and Sock Tape

Can grip tape replace cloth tape on the blade?
Grip tape is made for the handle, where hands and gloves need tack. The blade takes hits from pucks, ice and boards, so cloth tape remains the usual choice there. Check the product description for the intended use before wrapping the blade.
What is clear poly tape used for?
Clear polyethylene tape wraps over shin guards and socks to keep them in position. It is not meant for sticks. Use only enough turns to hold the guard, because a very tight wrap can restrict the calf and cut into the skin.
How do I know when to replace grip tape?
Replace it when the surface turns slick, edges lift or the tape wears through to the shaft. Sweat and heavy use shorten its life. Peel the old wrap off completely and wipe the shaft clean before you start a new one.
