What the game needs: scoreboard, shot clock or stopwatch
Start with who has to read it. A scoreboard or shot clock is judged on display size and the distance it can be read from, while a stopwatch is judged on memory and buttons. Stopwatches add memory for saved splits, which coaches use to review laps. Silent vibrating timers signal without sound, handy in classrooms and quiet rooms. For portable boards, check the power source: some run on five AA cells or a power bank, and a carrying case makes them easier to move between venues.
Wired time switches: voltage, load and schedule
Electronic time switches of this type are wired into a circuit, not plugged into a socket. Match the supply voltage range printed on the unit, for example 120 to 277 V, and make sure the current rating, such as 30 A, covers the load. An astronomic model adjusts switching to sunrise and sunset through the year, so lighting needs no seasonal resetting. Look at the mounting style and enclosure too, since some units are meant for indoor panels only. Installation should be done by a qualified electrician.
Questions about Scoreboards, Game Timers and Time Switches
- What does SPDT mean on a time switch?
- SPDT is single pole, double throw. One common terminal connects to either of two outputs, so the unit can switch a load on through one contact and off through the other. Check which contact your wiring uses before you connect anything.
- What does the amp rating on a timer mean?
- The amp rating is the largest current the contacts can switch safely. Add up the load on the circuit, such as lighting or a heater, and stay below the rating with some margin. Inductive loads like motors can need a higher rating than their running current.
- What is split memory on a stopwatch?
- A split is an intermediate time recorded while the stopwatch keeps running. Memory lets you recall those splits afterwards, which is useful for laps and interval training. Check how many records the model holds and whether it shows lap and total time together.
