Identify the part before you buy: model numbers, not looks

Cartridges, stems and spray heads are made for particular faucets and valves, so a part that looks similar often fails to fit. Find the brand and model number on the faucet body or an old part; cartridge numbers are often listed for specific valve series. Take photos, count splines and measure stem length and diameter if the label is gone. For a dripping handle, the seat, packing or cartridge is the usual culprit, and a replacement part is quicker than changing the whole faucet.

Industrial valves: size, pressure rating and liner

Larger valves in this range are rated by pipe size, pressure and body material. A 4 inch butterfly valve with a cast iron body and a 200 psi rating suits water lines, while the liner decides which fluids it can handle; Buna-N, a nitrile rubber, suits water and many oils. Check the operator too: a lever handle suits small sizes, and larger valves often use a gear operator. Match the flange standard and bolt pattern before you buy.

Questions about Faucet Cartridges, Valves and Repair Parts

How do I know which cartridge fits my faucet?
Look for a model number on the faucet body, under the handle or on the original paperwork, then match it to the maker's parts list. If you cannot find it, remove the old cartridge and compare its length, stem splines and body shape with the replacement before installing.
What is packing rope used for?
Packing rope, often graphite-impregnated, is wound around a valve stem under the packing nut to stop leaks where the stem passes through the body. If a stem weeps when you turn it, tightening the nut slightly or adding fresh packing usually cures it.
Wafer or lug butterfly valve: what is the difference?
A wafer valve is clamped between two pipe flanges by long bolts, so it is compact. A lug valve has threaded lugs around the body, so each side bolts separately and one side can be removed while the other stays in service. Lug types can suit end-of-line use.
