Mains, 12 V or USB: the controller must match the fan

Controllers come in three families: 120 V AC units that slow a mains-powered fan, 12 V DC units for computer and ventilation fans, and 5 V USB models for desk fans. They are not interchangeable, and connecting the wrong supply can destroy either part. Check the rated current or wattage against the fan's draw, leaving some margin, since a controller rated for a small load will overheat when asked to carry a larger one.

Among DC controllers, a 4-pin fan has a dedicated PWM wire, so the controller can vary its speed without lowering the supply, which gives smoother control at low speed. A 3-pin fan has no PWM wire and is slowed by reducing voltage, so a controller made for 3-pin fans is the right match. Many modules handle several channels, and a front-panel version fits a 5.25 inch drive bay in a PC case.

Timers need the right wiring and the right load rating

Wall timers for exhaust and bathroom fans come as spring-wound dials or electronic switches with preset runs such as 10, 20, 30 or 60 minutes. Electronic ones often need a neutral wire in the wall box, while models marked no neutral required suit older wiring. Check that the timer is rated for a motor load, not only for lights, and that its amp rating covers the fan. Furnace fan and limit controls with temperature settings in degrees Fahrenheit are heating parts, not room-fan controls.

Questions about Fan Speed Controllers and Timer Switches

Why does my fan hum when I slow it with a controller?
Some AC fan motors buzz when a controller chops the supply to lower speed, especially at the lowest settings. A controller built for fan motors, a higher minimum speed setting, or a motor that suits speed control reduces the noise.
What is the difference between 3-pin and 4-pin fan connectors?
Both carry power, ground and a speed signal back to the board. The fourth pin adds a PWM control input, so a 4-pin fan can be slowed without changing its supply voltage. A 4-pin fan generally works on a 3-pin header, but only voltage control is then possible.
Do I need a neutral wire for a fan timer switch?
Many electronic timers need one to power their circuitry. Look in the wall box for a bundle of white wires; if none is present, choose a timer marked no neutral required. Switch off the breaker before opening the box.
