Spray patterns and trigger style

Most hose nozzles offer several patterns: a solid stream or jet for reach and stubborn dirt, a cone or shower for watering plants, a flat fan for even coverage and a fine mist for delicate seedlings. A twist nozzle changes pattern by turning the head, a pistol grip with a squeeze handle shuts off when you let go, and thumb-control types start and stop the flow with a thumb lever. Look for flow control, so you can reduce flow without walking back to the tap.

Thread type, orifice size and pressure rating

Fit comes first. Garden hose nozzles use the standard 3/4 inch hose thread, while pressure-washer wands use quick-connect or M22 threads, and misting nozzles often use small threads such as 10/24 UNC or 1/8 BSPT. Check the maximum pressure: a nozzle rated at 3600 PSI is for a pressure washer, and a garden-hose nozzle must never be used on one. For misting, the orifice decides droplet size and flow, so 0.2 mm is finer than 0.5 mm. Brass and zinc bodies are tougher than plastic, and a hot-water rating is separate.

Questions about Spray Nozzles and Pressure Wands

Can I use a garden hose nozzle on a pressure washer?
No. Garden nozzles are built for household water pressure and can fail or be thrown off at pressure-washer levels, which is dangerous. Use a nozzle or tip rated for your washer's PSI, with the correct quick-connect or thread.
Does a brass nozzle last longer than a plastic one?
Brass and zinc bodies resist knocks and wear better, so they last longer in hard use, though hot water needs a nozzle rated for it. Plastic is lighter and cannot rust, and is fine for light watering. Look at the seals and trigger, which often wear out first.
What does the orifice size on a misting nozzle mean?
It is the hole diameter in millimeters. A smaller orifice, such as 0.2 mm, makes finer mist and uses less water but clogs more easily; a larger one, such as 0.5 mm, gives bigger droplets and more flow. Use clean water or a filter.
