Reading the replacement code: A, X and the colour set

Start with the code printed on your old cartridge, then find it in the listing's replaces or for-use-with line. Many codes come in pairs, such as a standard version and a high-capacity one with an X at the end; both may fit the printer, but they yield differently. Four-packs normally hold black, cyan, magenta and yellow, while single listings are one colour, so count what arrives. Some printers also need a separate drum or imaging unit, which toner alone will not replace.

Page yield, print coverage and chips

Stated yields, from a couple of thousand pages to many thousands, are measured on a test page at five percent coverage, so a heavy-ink document drains a cartridge sooner. Compatible does not mean identical: some are new-build, others remanufactured from used shells, and the description should say which. A chip tells the printer what is installed and how full it is, and printers that update their firmware may reject non-original chips. Colour matching can differ slightly between makers, so avoid mixing sources within one colour set.

Questions about Compatible Laser Toner Cartridges

Is compatible toner as good as the original?
It varies by maker. Good compatibles print readable text and acceptable colour at comparable yields, but they may differ in density or fade resistance. Judge by the stated yield, how the cartridge is described, and any chip notes in the listing.
Can I mix original and compatible toner colours?
Technically the printer will accept it if each cartridge fits, but colours may shift slightly from one maker to another. For consistent colour work, keep a full set from one source and replace the cartridges together.
Why did my printer say the toner is wrong?
Usually the cartridge code is wrong or the chip is not accepted. Compare the full code, including A or X suffixes, with your printer's manual. If the code is right, check the cartridge contacts and the printer's firmware status.
