Paper, wood, metal, glass and plastics each bond best with a different chemistry. Washable school glue and glue sticks suit paper and card, cyanoacrylate super glue grips small non-porous parts quickly but is brittle and bonds skin instantly, and spray adhesives cover large sheets such as posters. Common polyethylene and polypropylene plastics resist most glues, so look for a product that names them. Thread-locking and retaining compounds are for metal fittings and cure when air is excluded.

Glue guns, sticks and sprays: small details that decide fit

Hot glue guns take sticks of a set diameter, usually a mini size or a full size, and low-temperature guns are gentler on foam and fabric than high-temperature ones, so the stick and gun must match. Sprays come as permanent or repositionable; use them with good ventilation. Tube and bottle sizes are given in grams, ounces or milliliters, and gap-filling or high-strength types are named in the title. Mounting tape replaces glue where you do not want a wet bond.

Which glue is suitable for school projects?

Look for washable, non-toxic school glue or glue sticks that state they are for paper and card. They clean up with water and suit classroom use. Super glue and hot glue guns need adult supervision.

Do all hot glue sticks fit all glue guns?

No. Sticks come in a mini diameter of about 7 mm and a full-size diameter of about 11 mm, and guns are built for one or the other. Check temperature too: a low-temperature gun may not melt high-temperature sticks properly.

Will super glue bond every plastic?

No. It works well on many hard plastics and rubber but struggles with polyethylene and polypropylene, which are slippery and low in surface energy. Look for a plastic-bonding formula or a primer, and test on a hidden spot first.
