A see-through edge or a cutting edge

A clear plastic ruler lets you see the work underneath and is light and easy to replace, but its edge nicks and is not safe to cut against. Stainless steel stays straight, resists wear and can guide a blade, which is why craft knives and trimming call for steel. Wood suits school use. Check the markings: inches with 1/16 or 1/32 graduations, millimeters, or both on opposite edges.

Leads, compasses and lettering for technical work

Mechanical drafting pencils come in fixed lead diameters, with 0.5 mm for fine detail and 0.7 mm for sturdier lines, and the lead grade, from soft B through HB to hard H, sets how dark and how crisp the line is. A compass is judged by its lock and by whether it accepts pencil or pen inserts. Vinyl letters and numbers come in set heights, such as half an inch, for labels and drawings. Small LED magnifiers help with fine print.

Questions about Rulers and Technical Drawing Aids

Can I cut along a plastic ruler with a knife?
It is not advised. A blade nicks the plastic edge and can ride up over it, so the cut wanders and the ruler becomes unreliable. Use a steel straightedge for craft knives and keep the plastic ruler for pencil lines.
What do 1/16 and 1/32 graduations mean on a ruler?
They state the smallest division marked on the inch scale. A 1/16 inch ruler is fine for general measuring, while 1/32 inch graduations let you read smaller differences for model making or layouts. Metric rulers mark millimeters instead.
Are drafting pencils different from ordinary pencils?
Drafting pencils are fine-lead mechanical pencils or leadholders for thicker leads, both offered in a wide grade range. A fine-lead pencil keeps roughly the same line width as the lead wears, which matters for technical drawings, while a leadholder or wood pencil must be sharpened to keep its line fine.
