iPad Air 2 Gold 16GB new

The Apple iPad Air 2 in Gold ships new with 16GB of built-in storage and a 9.7 inch Retina display running at 2048 by 1536 resolution. It is aimed at users who want a lightweight iOS tablet for web browsing, email and media consumption. The A8X chipset and 2GB of RAM handle everyday apps and 1080p video playback. It is not suited for buyers who need large local libraries or modern multitasking workloads.

Storage capacity and headroom

Sixteen gigabytes provides space for the operating system, a modest selection of apps and some photos or offline documents. Heavy games, large video files or extensive offline media libraries will fill the drive quickly and there is no expansion slot. The 2GB of RAM keeps a few recent apps active but aggressive background refresh occurs when switching between memory-intensive tasks. Users who rely on abundant local storage should look elsewhere.

Build, connectors and daily use

The slim aluminium chassis houses an 8.0MP rear camera capable of 1080p recording and a 1.2MP FaceTime HD front camera for 720p video calls. Wireless connectivity uses 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0 for accessories such as keyboards or headphones. A Lightning port handles charging and data transfer while the side switch and volume buttons remain tactile. The single mono speaker is adequate for casual listening but headphones are recommended for immersive audio.
