Apple TV 3rd Gen 1080p Streamer

The 3rd Generation Apple TV is a compact media streamer that delivers up to 1080p video. It connects to a television via HDMI and includes optical audio output. The unit runs on a single core 32 nm Apple A5 processor with twice the RAM of the previous version. Built-in iCloud support allows access to purchased movies, TV shows, photos and other content.

For iOS and Mac households

This streamer suits buyers who want to rent or purchase movies from Apple and mirror content from an iPod, iPhone, iPad, Mac or PC. It also provides direct access to Netflix, YouTube and Flickr. Buyers who need 4K playback, higher Ethernet speeds or an included HDMI cable should look at other devices.

1080p maximum video resolution

The single specification that decides suitability is the 1080p video ceiling. If the display or content library requires 4K or HDR, this model will not meet that need. For standard HD viewing with AirPlay mirroring and the listed streaming apps, the resolution fits the requirement.

Questions about this item

Will the Apple TV 3rd Generation 1080p work with my older TV that only has HDMI 1.0 ports?

Yes, the HDMI port on this streamer is backward compatible with earlier HDMI versions, so it will connect and output video to an HDMI 1.0 display at supported resolutions.

How can I verify the Apple A5 processor is delivering smooth 1080p playback after setup?

Play a high-bitrate 1080p title from iTunes or Netflix; if the video starts instantly, scrubs without stutter, and the on-screen interface remains responsive, the single-core A5 is performing as intended.

The notes say no HDMI cable is included — what exactly ships in the box and what must I provide?

The box contains the Apple TV unit, an aluminium remote, and a power cord; you must supply your own HDMI cable and, if you prefer wired networking, an Ethernet cable.
