Streamer, tuner or capture card: one name, three jobs

Listings here do different jobs. A streaming player runs apps on a TV. An external TV tuner box receives broadcast channels and is only useful where you have an antenna or cable feed. A capture card records or streams video from a console, camera or other source into a computer. Satellite receiving gear belongs to a dish system. Decide your job first, because a streaming player cannot record a game and a capture card cannot run apps.

Capture hardware has its own traps. Internal cards use a PCIe slot: a card listed as PCIe Gen2 x4 needs a free slot that is x4 or wider, and newer-generation slots accept older cards, whereas USB models usually need a USB 3.0 port to carry 1080p at 60 frames. Protected sources, such as streaming apps and some set-top boxes, use copy protection that blocks capture, so check what you can actually record.

Player generations, remotes and what is in the box

Streaming players date quickly: an Apple TV of the 3rd generation tops out at 1080p, as does the HD model that followed it, while the 4K models handle 4K HDR, and each generation supports a different range of apps and software versions. Used or loose listings often say device only or no remote, so check the In the box field for a power adapter, remote and stand. Match your TV's HDMI inputs and resolution to the player, and look for Ethernet if Wi-Fi in the room is weak.

Questions about Streaming Players, TV Tuners and Capture Cards

Do I need a TV tuner box with a smart TV?
Usually not, since most TVs already include a tuner. A box helps for a monitor or older display with no tuner, or to feed broadcasts to a computer. Either way you still need an antenna or cable signal.
Why does my capture card show a black screen from a console?
The source may be copy-protected over HDMI, which blocks recording, or its output setting may not match the card's supported resolution. Check the card's list of supported formats and the console's video output and HDCP settings.
Can a streaming player be used on an older TV?
Yes, if the TV has an HDMI input. Players with only HDMI output will not connect to sets that have only composite or component inputs without a converter. A 4K player also works on a 1080p TV, but shows a 1080p picture.
