Hardware-encrypted portable drive

The Apricorn Aegis Padlock A25-3PL256-500 is a 500GB portable hard drive with integrated hardware encryption. It suits professionals and travellers who must protect sensitive data on a compact, bus-powered device without installing software.

256-bit AES-XTS encryption with keypad

The defining specification is the onboard 256-bit AES-XTS engine validated to FIPS PUB 197, which encrypts every sector in real time. A built-in keypad unlocks the drive before it becomes visible to the host, so the encryption key never touches the computer and the drive remains secure even if removed from its enclosure.

Thermal and power profile

The 5400 RPM 2.5-inch mechanism runs cool and silent in typical office or mobile use, drawing all power from the USB 3.0 connection. An included Y-cable supplies auxiliary current on ports that cannot deliver enough power alone, keeping the drive stable during sustained transfers.

Questions about this item

How does the 256-bit AES-XTS encryption protect data on this 500GB drive?

The drive uses real-time hardware encryption validated to FIPS PUB 197, so every file is encrypted on the fly and remains protected even if the mechanism is removed from its enclosure.

What practical speed limit does the USB 3.0 interface impose on this 5400 RPM drive?

USB 3.0 caps the connection at 5 Gbps, but the 5400 RPM mechanism typically delivers well below that ceiling, so the interface is not the bottleneck in everyday use.

Will the 2.5-inch form factor measuring 4.7 by 3.3 by 0.75 inches fit in a standard laptop bag pocket?

Yes, the slim 2.5-inch profile and integrated cable make it small enough for most laptop sleeves or accessory pockets, and a travel pouch is included.
