What this drive is

The Apricorn Aegis Secure Key 3.0 is a 120 GB hardware encrypted portable drive built for professionals who need hardware based protection without installing software. Its on board keypad unlocks the drive before it ever connects to a host computer.

Interface limits

The drive uses a USB 3.0 connection so transfer rates will follow that standard rather than newer USB specifications. Encryption and decryption happen inside the drive itself so performance does not depend on host processor resources or operating system support.

Build and daily use

FIPS 140-2 Level 3 validation covers eleven areas of the cryptographic module including physical tamper evidence and key management. The rugged epoxy filled casing resists physical attack and environmental stress while the integrated USB connector removes the need for a separate cable during daily transport.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 120 GB model or a larger capacity up to 480 GB?

Choose 120 GB if you mainly carry documents and small projects; step up toward 480 GB when you need to transport full system images or large media libraries.

What does the 256-bit AES-XTS encryption actually do when the drive is plugged in?

The hardware engine encrypts every byte on the fly with a 256-bit key, so data is unreadable the moment the drive is unplugged or the wrong PIN is entered.

How fast will the USB 3.0 interface really move data on this drive?

The USB 3.0 connection supports up to 5 Gb/s signalling, and the internal flash delivers read/write speeds that saturate that link for typical workloads.
