Portable storage for everyday backups

The Western Digital My Passport 4TB drive connects through USB 3.2 Gen 1 and fits in a pocket. It arrives formatted NTFS for Windows 10 and 8.1 and can be reformatted for other systems. The 4TB capacity holds large photo, video and document libraries. Automatic backup software runs on Windows to keep files current without manual effort.

Passive cooling and bus power

The drive has no fan and draws power directly from the USB port, so it adds no audible noise to a quiet room. The slim enclosure measures .75 by 2.95 by 4.22 inches and weighs .46 lb, keeping heat dissipation simple. USB 2.0 compatibility ensures it works on older ports without extra adapters.

Simple desktop or mobile setup

A SuperSpeed USB cable is included, so the drive works immediately on any USB 3.2 Gen 1 or 2.0 port. WD Discovery software handles password protection and 256-bit AES hardware encryption on Windows. The package also contains a quick install guide. Buyers who need hardware RAID or multi-bay expansion should look at larger desktop arrays.

Questions about this item

How do I install the WD My Passport 4TB drive and what step is often missed?

Connect the included SuperSpeed USB cable to a USB 3.2 Gen 1 port. The drive arrives formatted NTFS for Windows 10 and 8.1; for macOS you must reformat it before use, which is the step many people overlook.

What maintenance or replacement will the WD My Passport 4TB need later?

No scheduled maintenance is required for the sealed 4TB mechanism. Keep the USB 3.2 Gen 1 cable and WD Discovery software handy; if the cable is damaged, replace it with another SuperSpeed USB cable to retain full speed.

What limit appears first on the WD My Passport 4TB during sustained use?

The USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface caps sustained transfer rates. The 4TB mechanical drive can fill its 4TB capacity, and the 0.46 lb enclosure relies on passive cooling, so prolonged heavy writes may throttle before the drive itself reaches its limit.
