4 TB portable storage for PC and Mac

The Seagate STGX4000400 is a 4 TB portable hard drive in a 2.5" form factor that connects through a USB 3.0 interface. It draws power from the USB cable, so no external supply is needed. The drive works with Windows 10, 8 and 7 out of the box and can be reformatted for Mac compatibility. It arrives new in black with an 18 inch USB 3.0 cable and quick start guide.

Ideal for drag-and-drop backups on the move

This drive suits anyone who wants simple, lightweight extra capacity for documents, photos and videos without installing software. It is not for users who need the higher sustained throughput of an internal SSD or a drive with a faster interface than USB 3.0. Buyers who require hardware encryption, ruggedised casing or multi-bay RAID expansion should look elsewhere.

Fits a laptop bag and a single USB port

The slim 0.79 x 3.15 x 4.61 inch enclosure weighs 0.57 lb and slides into a bag pocket, leaving desk space free. Plug the included cable into any SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port for up to 5 Gbps bandwidth; the connection falls back to USB 2.0 speeds on older ports. No driver installation or external power brick is required, so the host system gains 4 TB of storage instantly.

Questions about this item

Does the drive need an external power adapter or does it draw power from the USB port?

The drive is powered via the USB cable, so there is no need for an external power supply.

Will the 4TB drive work at full speed if I connect it to a USB 2.0 port on my older laptop?

It is backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports at USB 2.0 transfer speeds; a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 port is required for USB 3.0 transfer speeds.

After plugging in the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable, how can I confirm the drive is recognised and ready to use?

The drive offers instant plug-and-play PC compatibility with automatic recognition; no software is required for setup.
