Internal Blu-ray reader and DVD writer

The ASUS BC-12B1ST is an internal optical drive that reads Blu-ray discs at 12x and DVDs at 16x. It writes DVD media at up to 16x and CD media at up to 48x. The unit fits a standard 5.25-inch half-height bay and connects through a SATA interface. It suits users who need to archive data or watch high-definition films on a desktop PC.

SATA interface limits transfer rates

The drive uses a SATA connection which caps the maximum sustained throughput to the bus speed of the controller. Peak read speeds of 12x for BD-ROM and 16x for DVD-ROM are only reached on outer tracks and with compatible media. Actual throughput will vary with disc quality, system load and the host controller implementation. The drive does not support writing to Blu-ray recordable formats.

Check bay space and software needs

Verify that your chassis has a free 5.25-inch half-height bay measuring 16.1 by 57.5 by 66.9 millimetres. A spare SATA data port and matching power connector are required on the motherboard or add-in card. Blu-ray playback and 3D features need compatible player software and a display that supports HDCP. The drive is RoHS compliant and includes E-Green power-saving technology.
