Internal Blu-ray Combo Drive

The ASUS BC-12D2HT/BLK/B/AS is an internal optical drive that reads Blu-ray discs at 12x and DVDs at 16x. It writes BD-R dual-layer media at 12x and supports BDXL high-capacity formats. A SATA interface connects the unit to the host system. Black bezel styling matches standard desktop chassis.

Suits desktop builders who need internal disc

This drive serves users who archive data to BD-R or BDXL media and who play or rip DVDs and CDs at 16x and 48x respectively. It is not for systems that lack a 5.25-inch bay or a free SATA port. Buyers wanting a portable USB optical drive should consider a different form factor.

12x BD-R dual-layer write speed

The 12x maximum write rate for BD-R dual-layer discs determines how quickly large archives can be created. DVD±R writing reaches 16x while CD-R writing reaches 48x. Access times are 180 ms for BD-ROM, 160 ms for DVD-ROM and 150 ms for CD-ROM.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the 12x BD or 16x DVD speed for my main use?

Choose based on the media you write most; the drive writes BD-R at 12x and DVD±R at 16x, so DVD tasks finish faster.

What does the 12x BD-ROM rating deliver in daily use?

It reads single- and dual-layer Blu-ray discs at up to 12x speed, with an 180 ms access time for data retrieval.

How does the SATA interface limit real-world throughput?

The SATA link caps sustained transfer at the drive’s rated 12x BD and 16x DVD speeds, so the bus is not the bottleneck.
