External Blu-ray drive for archiving and playback

The ASUS BW-16D1H-U is a USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A external drive that reads BD-ROM at 12X, DVD-ROM at 16X and CD-ROM at 40X. It writes DVD+R and DVD-R at 16X, DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL at 8X, DVD-RAM at 5X, and CD-R at 40X with CD-RW at 24X. The black enclosure includes a stand and ships with CyberLink Power2Go 8, PowerBackup 2.6, PowerDVD 14, InstantBurn 5 and Nero BackItUp for Windows.

Upgrade from internal tray or slower USB 2.0 units

This drive replaces an internal 5.25-inch burner or a USB 2.0 external when you need BD-ROM read capability and faster DVD write speeds without opening the case. The jump is worth it if your workflow involves authoring dual-layer DVDs, reading commercial Blu-ray discs, or burning CD-R media at 40X on a laptop or small-form-factor desktop that lacks an internal bay.

Sustained performance under long write sessions

The USB 3.2 Gen 1 interface keeps data flowing during sequential DVD+R 16X or CD-R 40X burns without the throughput drops seen on USB 2.0. An external 12 V 3 A adapter supplies steady power so the mechanism maintains constant angular velocity across full dual-layer DVD writes. The drive meets the listed system requirements of a 3.4 GHz Pentium D-class CPU, 1 GB RAM, 10 GB free disk space and an HDCP-compatible graphics card for protected high-definition playback.

Questions about this item

How much desk space do the 2.48" x 6.50" x 9.57" dimensions need?

The drive occupies a footprint of 6.50 inches wide by 9.57 inches deep and stands 2.48 inches high without the stand; allow extra room for cable routing and disc ejection.

Does the USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A cable plug directly into the drive or into a separate power adapter?

Connect the supplied USB cable to the drive's Type-A port and to the computer; the external +12V 3A power adapter must also be plugged into the drive before the computer will recognise it.

Will the tray-loading mechanism need lubrication or belt replacement after heavy use?

The mechanism is sealed and requires no user lubrication; if disc loading fails, the entire drive unit is replaced rather than servicing internal belts.
