Isolated USB 2.0 to RS-422/485 Adapter

The B&B Electronics USOPTL4 adds an isolated asynchronous serial port to a USB-only PC. It connects a terminal block for RS-422 or RS-485 wiring to a Type B female USB 2.0 port. Built-in 2 kV isolation protects the host from ground loops in industrial or field-service environments. The compact black enclosure measures 6 by 5.5 inches and includes LED status indicators.

Replaces Non-Isolated Serial Links

This adapter upgrades a direct USB-to-serial connection when ground-loop protection is required. The jump is worth it for remote device programming or long cable runs where voltage differences threaten the host port. A DIP switch selects RS-485 2-wire or 4-wire operation without rewiring. If isolation is not needed, the non-isolated USPTL4 serves the same pinout.

Limited by USB 2.0 and Legacy OS Support

Data rates top out at 460.8 Kbps over the USB 2.0 interface. Driver support extends to 32 and 64-bit Windows up to Windows 7 only; newer operating systems are not covered by the supplied driver CD.
