Baldwin PT490 Hydraulic Filter Element 18in

The Baldwin PT490 is a cartridge-style hydraulic filter element measuring 18 inches in length. It carries a 23 micron rating and features an outside diameter of 4 15/16 inches with a 1 17/32 inch inside diameter. The element includes two attached end seals for a secure fit.

Cartridge filter limits and housing compatibility

This element uses a cartridge design without threads and is intended for Nugent optional filter housings. The 23 micron rating defines its practical particle capture limit for hydraulic fluid. Thread size is not applicable, so the housing must accept a plain cartridge of these exact dimensions.

Installation notes and common issues

Installation requires sliding the element into a compatible Nugent housing and ensuring both end seals seat evenly. The most common issue is using a housing with mismatched diameter or length, which prevents the seals from compressing correctly and allows unfiltered fluid to bypass the element.

Questions about this item

Should I choose the 18 in length cartridge or a shorter alternative?

This cartridge is 18 in tall and 18 in long with a 4 15/16 in outside diameter, so it fits housings built for those exact dimensions.

What does the 23 micron rating mean for my hydraulic system?

A 23 micron rating means the element traps particles 23 microns and larger, protecting pumps and valves from wear caused by fine contamination.

Does the missing thread size affect which housing I can use?

Thread size is not applicable because this element uses two attached end seals to seat inside compatible Nugent optional filter housings instead of threading in.
