Network cable for 10/100 LANs

This Belkin Cat 5E patch cable connects computers, routers and switches in a Local Area Network. It carries 10/100 Base-T signals over a 5 ft copper conductor with RJ-45 plugs on both ends. The PVC jacket is black and the cable is unshielded. ||

Unshielded copper for short runs

The cable suits home or office desks where a short, flexible link is needed and electromagnetic interference is low. It is not for installers who need shielded cable for noisy environments, nor for builders who require Gigabit or 10 Gigabit performance, nor for runs longer than the supplied length. ||

Cat 5E rating limits speed to 100 Mbps

The Category 5E specification carried by this cable supports up to 100 Mbps on 10/100 Base-T networks. It will not negotiate Gigabit speeds even if the connected ports are capable of them. Choose a higher category cable when the network hardware demands faster throughput.

Questions about this item

Is the 5 ft length right for a desktop-to-router run?

The 5 ft length suits short runs such as a PC beside a router or a wall jack near the desk; measure the exact path before ordering.

What real-world speed does the Cat 5E rating deliver on a 10/100 Base-T LAN?

Cat 5E supports up to 100 Mbps on 10/100 Base-T networks, so file transfers and streaming run at Fast Ethernet rates.

How does the RJ-45 IEEE 802.3 connector limit the link?

The RJ-45 male ends follow the IEEE 802.3 pinout, capping the connection at 100 Mbps when paired with 10/100 Base-T equipment.
