Connects a 2.5 or 3.5 inch SATA drive to a 40-pin IDE motherboard using a Molex power connector at up to 3.0 Gbps
This adapter lets you connect a 2.5 or 3.5 inch SATA hard drive or SSD to a desktop system that only has a 40-pin IDE interface. It is intended for owners of legacy PATA motherboards who want to install a newer SATA storage device. The card provides one female SATA port, one male 40-pin PATA connector and a 4-pin Molex power input. No cable is included in the package.
The adapter supports ATA 100 and ATA 133 modes with a data transfer rate up to 3.0 Gbps. Under sustained load the link runs at the native SATA I speed ceiling rather than a burst figure. Actual throughput will depend on the host IDE controller, the drive firmware and the system BIOS. Compatibility issues can reduce effective speed on some older platforms.
Installation requires plugging the male 40-pin IDE end into the motherboard, attaching the SATA drive to the female port and supplying power through the Molex connector. The main difficulty is BIOS recognition; some older systems will not detect the SATA drive without a firmware update or specific drive-mode settings. Ensure the Molex power lead is firmly seated to avoid intermittent operation.
