Data plug or power plug? Reading SATA listings

SATA drives use two connectors. The data plug is small and L-shaped with seven contacts, and the power plug is wider with fifteen, so a cable listed as 15-pin SATA is power, not data. Molex to SATA adapters and SATA power splitters supply power only. There is no separate cable for SATA I, II or III: any good SATA data cable runs at 6 Gbit/s, and what matters is a clean latching fit. eSATA is the external variant with shielded cabling and a sturdier plug that is not interchangeable with the internal one.

Right-angle ends, latches and length

Listings say how the ends are angled: straight, left, right, up or down. Pick by where the port sits, since a drive bay or a graphics card can block one direction, and a title such as 90 degree to 180 degree means one angled end and one straight end. Internal SATA cables are limited to about 1 m (3.3 ft), and lengths of 6 in to 2 ft are common in small builds. Latching connectors resist being knocked out. Power splitters should serve only a few drives, because spinning hard drives draw more when they start.

Questions about SATA and eSATA Drive Cables

Do I need a special SATA III cable for a fast SSD?
No. SATA data cables are not graded by generation in practice, so any intact, well-fitting cable runs a SATA III SSD at its 6 Gbit/s limit. Replace a cable if you see dropped connections or errors.
Which way should a right-angle SATA cable point?
It depends on where the port sits. Check whether the angled end points left, right, up or down, and look at the space between the drive bay, neighboring drives and the motherboard before choosing.
Can I use an eSATA cable for an internal drive?
Not directly, as the plugs differ. An eSATA to SATA cable can link an external port to an internal-style drive, but the drive still needs its own power, since standard eSATA carries data only.
