USB 3.0 to SATA Adapter for Drive Access

This CoolGear adapter connects SATA hard drives and SSDs to a computer through a USB 3.0 port. It supports 2.5-inch, 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch SATA devices, including optical drives. Transfer rates reach up to 5 Gbps under the USB 3.0 specification. The adapter is backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1.

Suits Technicians and Users Recovering Data

The device suits technicians who need quick, external access to bare SATA drives for data recovery, cloning or backup. The One-Touch Backup function simplifies routine copies. No external power is required for 2.5-inch drives, while the included 12 V AC adapter powers 3.5-inch and 5.25-inch units. It is not for users who need an internal SATA controller or a multi-bay docking station.

USB 3.0 Interface with 5 Gbps Maximum Throughput

The single specification that decides fit is the USB 3.0 interface rated at up to 5 Gbps. This bandwidth determines how fast large volumes move between the drive and the host. If the workflow demands sustained speeds beyond this limit, a different connection method is required.

Questions about this item

What is the maximum sustained transfer rate when moving large files over USB 3.0?

The adapter complies with USB 3.0 to SATA specification for up to 5Gbps, though actual throughput depends on the attached drive and system.

Does the included AC adapter run continuously, and how much heat does it produce?

The 12VDC 2A supply powers 3.5 and 5.25 inch drives; it is only needed for those sizes and runs cool under normal load.

Will this work with just a laptop and a 2.5 inch SSD, or do I need extra cables?

A 2.5 inch drive needs no external power; the package includes the USB 3.0 A to B cable and the adapter itself.
