M.2 describes a shape, not a protocol. An M.2 drive may speak SATA or NVMe over PCIe, and an adapter built for one will not work with the other. M-key NVMe drives need a PCIe adapter card or an NVMe enclosure, while M.2 SATA drives, usually with both B and M notches, need an adapter made for SATA. Read the listing for both the key type and the protocol it supports. A PCIe card with a heatsink suits a fast NVMe drive, and its lane count, x4 for full speed, sets the bandwidth.
Old IDE drives use a 40-pin ribbon cable and, on a shared cable, jumper settings for master or slave, while 2.5-inch laptop IDE drives use a 44-pin connector that also carries power. SATA drives need both a data cable and a power connector, and small power adapters convert older Molex plugs. USB bridges for 2.5-inch drives normally run from USB alone, whereas 3.5-inch drives need their own power supply. For speed, look for USB 3.0 or newer, and for UASP support if you move large files.
