5.25" Bay Drive Adapter

This anodised aluminium bracket converts a standard 5.25 inch drive bay into a mount for one 3.5 inch or one 2.5 inch drive. It accepts any 2.5 or 3.5 inch IDE, SATA or SAS hard drive or solid-state disk. The kit includes four rubber washers and 16 mounting screws for secure installation. Builders adding storage to a desktop with a free optical bay will find it useful.

Replacing Optical Drives With Storage

The adapter replaces a legacy optical drive or filler panel, letting you reuse a 3.5 inch mechanical drive or a 2.5 inch SSD in its place. The upgrade is worth it when a system has an unused 5.25 inch bay and needs extra internal capacity without external enclosures. Mounting only one drive is recommended for heat dissipation. Cases with customised or non-standard bay dimensions may not accept the bracket.

Tool-Less Alignment And Vibration Damping

Installation requires only a screwdriver to fasten the supplied screws through the bracket into the drive and bay. The rubber washers isolate vibration and protect the drive PCB from metal contact. What usually goes wrong is forcing the bracket into a bay that is slightly undersized or misaligned, which can bend the aluminium tabs. Verify the bay is a true 5.25 inch standard before starting.
