DATO ARES Amber Shield 2TB Portable SSD

The DATO ARES Amber Shield is a 2 TB portable solid-state drive that connects through a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 Type-C interface. It delivers sequential speeds up to 1600 MB/s read and 1500 MB/s write. An IP67-rated enclosure protects against water and dust, while graphene thermal material helps manage heat during sustained transfers. The drive weighs 40 grams and measures 8.9 by 4.6 by 1.65 cm.

Who this suits and who should look elsewhere

Creators and professionals moving large media libraries between laptops, desktops, consoles and OTG-enabled phones will benefit from the 20 Gb/s link and rugged casing. Users whose devices only offer 10 Gb/s or 5 Gb/s USB ports will not reach the advertised throughput and may prefer a smaller, less expensive drive. Buyers needing capacities beyond 2 TB or internal M.2 installation should consider other form factors.

The spec that decides fit

The USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 interface is the single specification that determines whether this drive matches your hardware. Your host must support 20 Gb/s Type-C operation to achieve the quoted 1600/1500 MB/s speeds; on 10 Gb/s or 5 Gb/s ports performance will scale down to the port limit.

Questions about this item

Does my computer need a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 port to reach the 1600 MB/s read speed?

Yes, the 1600 MB/s read and 1500 MB/s write figures require a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 host port; slower ports will limit transfer rates.

Will the included 10Gb/s Type-C to Type-A cable let me use the drive on my older USB-A laptop?

Yes, the supplied 10Gb/s C-to-A cable provides backward compatibility, though speeds will be capped at the USB 3.2 Gen 2x1 limit of the Type-A port.

How can I confirm the graphene thermal design is keeping the drive cool during heavy transfers?

The enclosure should stay only warm to the touch even after sustained 1600 MB/s reads; excessive heat would indicate a thermal issue.
