Dell Latitude 7490 14 laptop

The Dell Latitude 7490 is a 14.0" business laptop powered by an Intel Core i7-8650U quad-core processor running at 1.9 GHz with Turbo Boost up to 4.2 GHz. It comes with 8GB DDR4 memory and a 256GB M.2 NVMe PCIe SSD. The Full HD display resolves 1920 x 1080 and is driven by integrated Intel UHD Graphics 620. Windows 10 Pro is pre-installed.

Compatibility checklist

Verify that your existing peripherals use USB 3.0 Type-A, HDMI or Thunderbolt 3 via the USB-C port. The system includes Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 for networking. A microSD card reader is present. There is no optical drive, so plan for external media if required. Memory and storage upgrade paths depend on the motherboard layout, which is not detailed here.

Suitability notes

This unit suits mobile professionals who need a compact 14-inch chassis with Thunderbolt 3 docking capability and a fast NVMe boot drive. Buyers who want more storage capacity or a discrete graphics processor should look at other configurations. The 8GB soldered or single-slot memory may limit heavy multitasking workloads. Users requiring a touchscreen or a larger display diagonal will need a different model.

Questions about this item

What comes in the box with the Latitude 7490 and is a Thunderbolt 3 cable included?

Should I choose the 8 GB DDR4 configuration or look for a larger memory option for this model?

This unit ships with 8 GB of DDR4 memory. If your workload needs more capacity, you would need to source and install a compatible SO-DIMM yourself.

What does the 4.2 GHz turbo figure mean for everyday performance on the i7-8650U?

The processor can temporarily reach 4.2 GHz on active cores when thermal headroom allows, giving a burst of speed for short tasks before returning to the 1.9 GHz base clock.
