Four-socket Xeon platform

The Dell PowerEdge R940 is a 3U rack server equipped with four Intel Xeon Gold 5120 processors running at 2.2 GHz with 14 cores each. It ships with 64 GB of DDR4 registered ECC memory across 48 slots and includes a PERC H730P RAID controller. This configuration targets enterprises running memory-intensive databases, virtualisation clusters or analytics workloads that demand high core counts in a compact form factor.

Eight-bay chassis with hot-swap power

The 2.5-inch drive cage holds eight bays and currently houses two 800 GB SATA SSDs managed by the 12 Gb/s SAS/SATA controller supporting RAID levels 0, 1, 5, 6, 10, 50 and 60. Network connectivity comes from an Intel X520/I350 daughter card providing two 1 GbE and two 10 Gb SFP+ ports. Dual 1600 W platinum power supplies and iDRAC9 Enterprise enable remote management and uninterrupted operation during module replacement.

Redundant cooling for sustained loads

Redundant hot-swap power supplies and system fans maintain thermal stability across all four sockets under continuous multi-threaded workloads. The 3U height allows airflow paths sized for the 14-core CPUs and high-density memory population without throttling. Power draw scales with processor utilisation while the platinum-efficiency units minimise waste heat in dense rack deployments.
