Mobile workstation for CAD

The Dell Precision 7730 pairs an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H six-core processor with 32GB of DDR4 memory and a dedicated NVIDIA Quadro P3200 graphics card carrying 6GB of GDDR5 video memory. A 17.3-inch FHD IPS panel at 1920 x 1080 resolution covers 72% colour gamut. Storage is provided by a 128GB PCIe NVMe M.2 SSD and the system ships with Windows 11 Pro.

Sustained thermal headroom

The six-core i7-8750H runs at a 2.20GHz base frequency and can reach 4.10GHz with Intel Turbo Boost, while the Quadro P3200 delivers certified driver stability for professional 3D applications. The chassis design includes revised cooling intended to maintain performance during extended rendering or simulation sessions rather than short bursts.

Upgrade from integrated graphics laptops

Buyers moving from systems that rely on integrated graphics gain dedicated GDDR5 memory and ISV-certified drivers for CAD and DCC workflows. The 128GB boot drive is modest, so users with large project libraries should plan additional storage. Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 ports support external displays and peripherals.

Questions about this item

How loud and hot does the Precision 7730 get when the i7-8750H and Quadro P3200 run at full load for hours?

The 6-core i7-8750H and 6 GB Quadro P3200 share a dual-fan thermal design built for sustained workstation workloads; expect noticeable fan noise under continuous heavy compute but temperatures stay within Dell's specified limits.

Which cables or docks must I already own to use the Thunderbolt 3, HDMI 2.0 and USB 3.1 ports on this laptop?

You need a Thunderbolt 3 cable or dock for 40 Gb/s devices, an HDMI 2.0 cable for 4K 60 Hz external displays, and standard USB-A 3.1 Gen 1 cables for existing peripherals.

Will my older USB 3.0 drives and DisplayPort monitors work directly with the 7730's Thunderbolt 3 and HDMI 2.0 ports?

Yes — USB 3.0 devices connect to the USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A ports at 5 Gb/s, and DisplayPort monitors attach via a Thunderbolt 3-to-DisplayPort adapter or the HDMI 2.0 port with a passive cable.
